Visual Studio 2008 and Nested Masterpages

I will use a web template from oswd.org to demonstrate the use of Master Pages and how they are supported in Visual Studio 2008. Specifically, I will show the inheritance features by using two Master Pages.

In the past I have used a single master page to get the same result. I would setup two content placeholders, one for the left column, and one for the right column. If my derived page did not need the left side column it would just not provide the content for the left column placeholder.

I am wondering what benefits to there are inherent to the approach you take in this very informative and helpful video?

This only happens when the Site is loaded on an IIS server, I can view everything fine locally...any help would be appreciated.
