Likely most web pages are synchronous with regards to interaction; example: the end user fills in a form, clicks a SUBMIT button, waits for a reply from the server, then continues.

With Ajax, it is possible to send only part of the page to the server.

While server side processing is happening, the end user can still perform other activities on the client side web page.

The J is for JavaScript which is the scripting language generally used with Ajax.

XML is not necessary but often data from the server can be returned as XML. Of course, the programmer needs to understand how to use the returned data be it in XML or otherwise.
