One thing that I'm still unclear on though: It seems that when using MasterPages, _everything_ has to be configured to runas=server...? I can never seem to mix server controls with standard client-side controls. For example, even static logos/images must be displayed using asp:Image tags rather than simple html img tags. While I can certainly use the asp controls, it seems to tax the server unnecessarily.
