Also, I wasn't that clear on the scalability vs performance discussion. What was the alternative to using Session variables , to use Cache instead ?

I totally agree with Ayende on not using membership provider with MVC. The marriage as rob calls it. Is not really a happy one. I done it a couple of times and to be fair it would have been easier to write my own which is better tailored to the application use, especially when using roles aswell. The way Membership force you to use a certain data pattern is not really working well with mvc.
