I have my own DAL (no EF but LINQ compliant mostly). And my next step is create a JS-calls handler that proxies JS calls to an content object and renders new content html or redirects, depeding on returned result from server. User friendly error notifications are planned among with modal dialogs infrastructure. Etc and so on...

However, you can also use a mod-rewrite (URL rewriting)ISAPI/module/handler with a regular aspx/asp.net app. There's quite a few articles already written on this topic.
