I think that's supposed to be the randomly-generated number for the development server. Check the url while the page is running. The example has 43246, but it will likely be different for each user/project. Mine was 53198.

That is correct. if param is not a route value, it's added as a query string and used the query String $ in the URL. Look at any URL on the index page later in the tutorial.

What a mess... the solution was I had to ensure the database did not already exist! Oy vey. That's part of logical development: build an object model, data model, then move onto business rules, etc.

Why must the Entity Framework force construction of the database? That's insane!

This really is the most convoluted and invasive solution to a problem (mechanism) I've ever seen.
