I'm just getting to grips with ASP.NET so it was interesting to see how you went about using CSS with ASP.NET and Visual Studio; I think the comment about this being for beginners is justified, I'd imagine anyone vaguely familiar with both ASP.NET and CSS would know all of this already - although I'm not sure that just watching the last 3 minutes would achieve much. As am ASP.NET beginner it was great.

Comment Posted by mbielski

I have to agree with dadvir. Way too long for such a simple, and very geared towards beginners concept. I shouldn't have had to sit through 5+ minutes of setting up the project and the page. That should have all been done before this video started.

He did, however, bring up a very valid point. Styling tags is not a good way to achieve what you need. Also, simple, granular classes give you much more power over your page with less work. He also should have mentioned that more than one class can be applied to one element (eg: all of his classes that used font-weight:bold; could have had bold as another class that was then applied like class='bold hdi-ui-header')

A for topic

B for execution

Comment Posted by jking

bielski, it is a good point that you can apply multiple class names to an element in modern browsers, but I don't see the advantage of creating such a simple class like "bold" and then applying it to each element's class attribute instead of just adding {font-weight:bold} to the individual class definitions as requireed. When you think about maintenance requests, you'll find yourself going back into the elements and removing/adding "bold" in the class attribute. That is about the same as implementing 'font-weight:bold' as an inline style and then having to go into each of the elements and remove it when the client changes his/her mind. Though it seems repetitive, it is a lot less work and bandwidth to add/remove 'font-weight:bold' to each class definition as needed in a central .css than it is to add/remove class="bold" from individual elements throughout an entire project. And I believe it is ultimately more flexible. I don't know ... you be the judge :-)

Comment Posted by mm7001@hotmail.com

ooh awesome

Comment Posted by joeller

Thank you Chris; I am mainly concerned with styling for tableless layout, but all the explanations I had seen were discussing applying these styles to the master page. I was not even sure that you could apply a style sheet to the content page. Now I think I can do what I have spent the better part of a day trying to do.

@dadvir, I would suggest that by the time Chris created the stylesheet he had explained exactly what he proposed to do. I knew at that time I was not going to see any layout styling but I knew I would see styling applied elsewhere other than the master page, which was a big part of what I needed. So if you were not interested in what he was demonstrating then you should have stopped watching then.
